The Bastakia Quarter or the Al Fahidi Historic District is located south of Dubai Creek. It consists of ‘barjeel’ wind tower houses, lanes, and courtyards dating back to the late 1800s when Persian merchants were settled first of all in the area. As the oldest district in Dubai, Al Bastakiya is filled with cultural attractions and museums.
Named after Bastak, the south Iran town by the Persian settlers, Bastakia is a maze of squares, restored stone-and-mud houses as well as narrow alleys. Some of them are wind tower houses where towers circulate winds across the interiors, along with art galleries, museums, cafes and shops. You can witness the authentic feel of bygone era when city was nothing but sleepy pearl-trading port.
The Dubai Old Town tour package covers Bastakia, which is a small stop after Dubai Museum in the proximity to Dubai Museum and Al Fahidi Fort, which was built in 19th century. Our Dubai tour package covers a walk through Bastakia along the enclave. Some travelers visit here just to relax and enjoy.
We don’t recommend you to drive to Bastakia as there is problem with parking. It is best to hire cabs and ask to drop you off at the intersection of Al Mankhool Road on Al Fahidi Street, Bur Dubai.
You can also catch a bus or metro to its Al Fahidi stops, or go to Deira Old Souk to ride abra water taxi to Bur Dubai dock. Bastakia is located only 15 minutes of walking distance from these attractions.
You can visit Bastakia any time and any day. However, its shops and museums have different opening hours. It is ideal to visit from 9am to 2 pm from Sunday to Thursday to enjoy your visit at its best when attractions and museums are also open. You can also stroll on the evening when some cafes still remain open and you can admire the sunset on the creekside. Also visit Coin Museum if you are in Bastakia.
