Usually, Penang Botanic Gardens are just known as Botanic Gardens by the locals. These gardens are also called the Waterfall Gardens and they are located along Jalan Kebun Bunga. This area is well landscaped which has different types of exotic and indigenous species of plants. Established by Charles Curtis in 1884 and the Gardens & Forests Departments Straits Settlements, Penang Botanic Gardens were initially old quarry site and there are 12 different sections of Penang Botanic Gardens.
There is also a special path in the Moon Gate of Penang Botanic Gardens which leads high up Penang Hill. It is around an hour’s long trek, which is steep but highly rewarding and delightful experience. Well, you need to be careful as it is known as Monkey Gardens for a reason. In this trek, macaques can be a bit frisky and cheeky. Don’t try to touch or feed them and don’t get too close as they can bite. If you do it, there is also a fine for RM500. Along with macaques, the gardens also have other wildlife species like black giant squirrels, dusky leaf monkeys, and a lot of butterflies and insects.
