Located atop a hill in Johor Bahru and facing the neighboring Singapore and the Straits of Johor, stands one of the magnificent and most beautiful old mosques of Malaysia, the Abu Bakar Mosque.
The mosque started construction during the modernization process of Johor in 1892 and it was commissioned by the late Sultan Abu Bakar who is known as ‘the Father of Modern Johor’. The construction took 8 years and it was built in 1900. It has the capacity of over 2000 worshippers at a time.
The mosque is mainly Victorian but it is a blend of archictectural styles and the minarets look mainly like the British watch towers. It is a blend of Moorish and Victorian styles with a bit of influence in Malay style. It allows the entry of both Muslims and non-Muslims. However, it is recommended to wear modest and decent clothing as a sign of respect.

You can get to the state mosque from the city centre by a taxi by paying affordable fare from Johor Bahru. It costs around RM3 for each ride. You can also get there by Muafakat Bus P-101.
You can take MRT from Woodlands MRT Stop to get to the mosque from Singapore. It costs only $1.10 to reach Johor Bahru. Then, you can take taxi to the mosque once you clear Malaysian customs formalities.
